Tuttletown is a small community in Tuolumne County, California. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). You can find it along California State Route 49, close to the historic Gold Rush town of Columbia.
Tuttletown is located at an elevation of about 1,047 feet (319 meters) above sea level. In 2010, the population of Tuttletown was 668 people. It was once called Mormon Gulch and Tuttleville.

History of Tuttletown
Tuttletown is recognized as a California Historical Landmark. This means it's an important historical site in California.
The area was first known as Mormon Gulch. This name came from a group of Mormon settlers. They started mining for gold here in 1848.
Later that year, a judge named A. A. H. Tuttle moved to the area. He built a log cabin, which became a popular tavern. This tavern was a central spot for the growing village. Because of Judge Tuttle, the community eventually became known as Tuttletown.

Tuttletown covers an area of about 7.4 square miles (19.1 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.09%, is water.
Population and People
In 2010, the 2010 United States Census counted 668 people living in Tuttletown. This means there were about 90.8 people per square mile.
Most of the people living in Tuttletown were White (91.8%). There were also smaller groups of Native American, African American, Asian, and Pacific Islander residents. About 7.2% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
All 668 people lived in homes, not in group housing or institutions. There were 293 households in total. About 20.8% of these homes had children under 18 living there. The average household had about 2.28 people.
The population included people of all ages. About 17.1% were under 18 years old. Many residents were aged 45 to 64 (40.3%) or 65 and older (22.2%). The average age in Tuttletown was 51.7 years.
Most homes (77.5%) were owned by the people living in them. The rest (22.5%) were rented.
California Historical Landmark Status
Tuttletown is officially recognized as California Historical Landmark number 124.
The landmark plaque tells us:
- Tuttletown was a popular stopping place for travelers and their horses.
- It was named after Judge Anson A. H. Tuttle, who built the first log cabin in 1848.
- Stones from the old Swerer store, built in 1854, were used in the plaque's base.
- Famous writer Mark Twain used to visit and trade at the Swerer store.
- The Tuttletown Hotel, built in 1852, was still standing in 1949.
