Discover the Tweed Museum of Art

The Tweed Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1950. It was started thanks to a generous gift from Alice Tweed Tuohy. She was the wife of George P. Tweed. Alice donated their family home and about 500 pieces of art. This art included works from America and Europe.

How the Museum Started

Alice Tweed Tuohy wanted to share art with everyone. She hoped it would make life better for students and people in the community. From 1950 to 1958, the museum was in the Tweed family home.

A new building for the museum was built in 1958. This new building was on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus. Most of the money for this building came from Mrs. Tweed and her daughter, Bernice Brickson. The museum building has been made bigger and updated several times since then.

What You'll Find Today

Today, the museum is a large building. It has about 33,000 square feet of space. About 15,000 square feet are used for showing art. The museum has nine different galleries. Each year, about 33,000 people visit the Tweed Museum.

The art collection is very important. It includes art from the 15th century all the way to today. You can see European, American, and world art. The art comes in many forms, like paintings and sculptures. Many artists from the Upper Midwest and Minnesota are featured.

Famous Artists at Tweed

The museum has works by many well-known artists. These include Thomas Hart Benton and Robert Motherwell. You can also see art by Gilbert Munger. The Tweed Museum has the largest collection of paintings by this American landscape artist.

Special Collections

The museum also has a unique collection of paintings. These show the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. These works were given to the museum by the Potlatch Corp. They include art by Arnold Friberg.

In 2007, the museum received a new collection. This was the Richard E. and Dorothy Rawlings Nelson Collection. It features American Indian art. This collection helped the museum start new programs. It also helped them collect more modern American Indian art.
