History of Twin Sisters
The community of Twin Sisters got its name from two hills nearby. These hills are a very noticeable landmark in the area. The first person to settle here was Joel Cherry. He moved from Tennessee and made his home by the Little Blanco Creek in 1854.
Soon after, more settlers from England and Germany arrived. By the late 1850s, Twin Sisters became an important German settlement in Blanco County. A post office opened in Twin Sisters in 1856. It was the very first post office in the county! It stayed open until 1951, after which mail came from the town of Blanco. The post office closed for a short time during the American Civil War but reopened as more people moved to the area.
By 1890, Twin Sisters had three general stores, a gristmill (which grinds grain), and a cotton gin (which separates cotton fibers). One of the stores was owned by Max Krueger. He moved to Twin Sisters in 1875 and was the first postmaster and a local judge. Later, a dance hall and a bowling alley were built. They even brought in beer from St. Louis! Max Krueger tried to open a small brewery, but it didn't work out because he couldn't afford to transport the beer or keep it cool. He also closed the dance hall because of too many fights.
A two-year drought caused many farmers and ranchers to leave the area, including Max Krueger. However, his oldest son, Willy, later returned. Willy bought back the post office and general store and ran them until the 1940s. Today, the main activities in Twin Sisters are ranching and farming. From 1970 to 2000, the population of Twin Sisters remained around 78 people.
