Two Wells Fargo Center is a tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It stands about 433 feet (132 meters) high and has 32 floors. The building was finished in 1971. It was designed by LaBella Associates.

This building was once the tallest in North Carolina. It passed the Winston Tower in Winston-Salem. However, in 1974, the Bank of America Plaza became taller. Today, Two Wells Fargo Center is the 13th tallest building in Charlotte. In 2006, its outside color was changed from beige to gray. This change helped it match the nearby Wachovia Main building.

A Building with Many Names

Over the years, this building has had several different names. When it was first finished, it was called Jefferson First Union Tower. Later, its name changed to First Union Plaza.

First Union was a bank that owned the building. They also owned a smaller 12-story building nearby. This smaller building was built in 1954 by Union National Bank, which later became First Union.

In 1985, First Union bought more buildings on the block. This gave the bank ownership of the entire city block. They tore down most of the buildings they bought. However, they saved the front part, or façade, of an old Masonic Temple. A park was created where the other buildings used to be.

The First Union Complex

In February 1988, First Union employees moved into a new main office building. This new building was called One First Union Center. The 32-story tower we are talking about became known as Two First Union Center.

Together, these two buildings and the smaller one formed the "Two First Union complex." The shorter building was famous for its colorful Charlotte Hornets basketball team murals. In the late 1990s, there were plans to build an even taller building, 70 to 80 stories high, on the Tryon Street site. It was going to be called Four First Union.

Becoming Wachovia Center

Later, First Union merged with another bank called Wachovia. After this merger, the complex was renamed. Two First Union Center became Two Wachovia Center.

Wachovia had plans to move out of the shorter building in 2003 and 2004. But they decided to make it new again instead. The last time it had been updated was in the 1970s. During the renovation, some employees worked in other places temporarily. They moved back into the building in the spring of 2006.

On October 12, 2006, a new main bank branch opened on the ground floor. It was one of Wachovia's largest branches. It replaced smaller branches in One and Three Wachovia Center. This new branch was about 8,500 square feet. It was designed in a style similar to branches in big cities like New York City and Dallas.

The Wells Fargo Era

In December 2010, the building changed its name again. This happened because Wells Fargo bought Wachovia in 2008. So, the large building was renamed Two Wells Fargo Center, which is its name today.
