One Wells Fargo Center is a very tall building, called a skyscraper, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It's the main office for Wells Fargo's operations on the East Coast.
Standing 588 feet (179 m) tall with 42 floors, it is the fifth tallest building in Charlotte. When it first opened on September 14, 1988, it was the tallest building in all of North Carolina. Later, taller buildings like the Bank of America Corporate Center (in 1992) and the Hearst Tower (in 2002) were built. This building is special because it was Charlotte's first high-rise designed in the postmodern style.

Building History
Early Plans and Construction
In July 1985, two companies, Trammell Crow Co. and Norfolk Southern Corp., announced plans for a big building project. It would be located between College and Brevard Streets in Charlotte. The main part of the project was a 34-story skyscraper. It was planned to be made of granite and glass. This building was first called Two First Union Center. It was designed in the postmodern style.
The project also included a hotel, two more office buildings, and a park. Unlike many buildings with flat roofs, this one had a unique rounded top. It looked "like an old radio," according to its designers, JPJ Architects. Construction for the first office tower was set to begin in December 1985. They hoped to finish it by 1987.
Becoming Charlotte's Tallest Building
By mid-1986, the plans for Two First Union Center changed. It became a 42-story building, making it the tallest in Charlotte. In December, another company announced plans for an even taller building. So, First Union's new headquarters was renamed One First Union Center.
On August 21, 1987, One First Union Center became the city's tallest building. This happened when concrete was poured for its 41st floor. The building cost $100 million to build. In February 1988, First Union employees started moving into their new offices. The name Two First Union Center then referred to the bank's older offices on Tryon Street.
The Hotel and Name Changes
A hotel was also planned as part of the project. By May 1988, its foundation was ready. It was expected to be 19 stories tall with 250 rooms. On October 18, 1990, the 22-story, 410-room Omni Charlotte hotel officially opened. It was called "probably our finest facility" by the Omni president.
Over the years, the hotel changed owners and names. In 1996, it became a Westin hotel. In 1998, Hilton Hotels bought it. Today, it is known as the Hilton Charlotte Center City.
The main skyscraper also changed its name several times. After First Union bought Wachovia in 2001, the building's name changed to One Wachovia Center in 2002. In 2007, Wachovia planned to move its headquarters to a new building. But then, Wells Fargo bought Wachovia in 2008.
In December 2010, the building was renamed One Wells Fargo Center. It now holds the main offices for Wells Fargo's East Coast operations. In June 2012, a company from Israel bought the building for $245 million. Later, in February 2013, two other companies bought it for the same price. The building was sold again in March 2016 for $284 million.
Even though Wells Fargo is the biggest tenant, using 70 percent of the space, other large businesses and law firms also have offices there. The Wells Fargo Center area also includes Two Wells Fargo Center, Three Wells Fargo Center, the Hilton hotel, and a condominium complex with 58 homes.
Peregrine Falcons
Since 2013, a pair of Peregrine Falcons have made their nest at One Wells Fargo Center. These amazing birds have raised their young there. The Carolina Raptor Center even sets up a 'Falcon Cam'. This allows people to watch the nesting falcons online from their computers!
