Tyrone M. Carter (born March 31, 1976) is a former American football player. He was a safety in the National Football League (NFL). Tyrone played for several teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Diego Chargers. He was known for his strong play and winning two Super Bowl championships.

Early Life and High School Football

Tyrone Carter was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He grew up in Pompano Beach, Florida. He attended Blanche Ely High School. There, he was a star player in football.

As a senior, he was named an all-county defensive player. He also played running back on offense. He gained 1,349 yards and scored 23 touchdowns. This showed he was a very talented athlete.

College Football Star

Tyrone went to the University of Minnesota. He played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. He studied sociology while in college.

He was recognized as one of the best college football players. In 1998 and 1999, he earned All-American honors. In 1999, he won the Jim Thorpe Award. This award goes to the best defensive back in college football. He was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. This award is for the top defensive player in the country.

Tyrone also won the Carl Eller Award twice. This award is given to the best defensive player on the Gophers team. During his college career, he made 584 tackles. This was a record for his division.

Playing in the NFL

Before joining the NFL, Tyrone showed his skills at the NFL Combine. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings picked Tyrone Carter in the fourth round of the 2000 NFL draft. He signed a contract with them in June 2000. In his first year, he made 40 tackles. He played three seasons with the Vikings.

He later returned to the Vikings in 2004. However, he got a knee injury during a preseason game. He was then released from the team.

New York Jets

In 2003, Tyrone signed with the New York Jets. He played one season for them. This was a great year for him. He had his career bests in tackles (88) and interceptions (2). In 2004, he was released by the Jets.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Tyrone joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in October 2004. He played in 9 games that season. He re-signed with the Steelers in 2005.

In 2005, he played in all 20 games for the Steelers. This included the regular season and playoffs. The Steelers won Super Bowl XL that year. Tyrone helped his team win the championship.

He signed another contract with the Steelers in 2007. When starting safety Ryan Clark became ill, Tyrone stepped up. He started 5 games in Clark's place.

In 2008, Tyrone played in all 16 regular-season games. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week once. This was after a game where he had 4 tackles and 2 interceptions. He also scored a touchdown. He earned his second Super Bowl ring when the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII.

In 2009, Tyrone continued to be an important player. He filled in when other safeties were injured. He had two interceptions in a game against the Denver Broncos. One of these was returned 48 yards for a touchdown. He was again named AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Washington Redskins

In August 2010, Tyrone signed with the Washington Redskins. However, he was released by the team in September 2010. He did not play in any games for them.

San Diego Chargers

In October 2010, Tyrone was signed by the San Diego Chargers. He joined the team to help fill a spot for an injured player. He played 7 games for the Chargers.

Personal Life

Tyrone Carter is married to April. They have two children together, Tyra and Tyree. Tyrone also has three other children from previous relationships: Tyrone Jr., Tristan, and April. He has a brother named Tank Carter.
