Tytsjerksteradiel is a special area in the Netherlands. It is a municipality (which is like a local government area) located in the province of Friesland. The name Tytsjerksteradiel comes from the town of Tytsjerk.
The name Tytsjerk comes from a person named Tiete. Tiete was the daughter of a woman named Tryn. The area around Tytsjerk is called Trynwâlden, named after Tryn. Other villages in Trynwâlden are also named after Tryn's children. For example, Oentsjerk is named after Oene, and Gytsjerk is named after Giete. There is even a statue of Tryn and her children in Oentsjerk. The word "Tsjerk" means "church" in the local West Frisian language.
Until 1989, the official name of this area was Tietjerksteradeel, which is the Dutch name. Now, the official name is in West Frisian. The biggest village in Tytsjerksteradiel is Burgum.
