Unione Sportiva Cremonese, often called Cremonese, is an Italian football team. They are based in Cremona, a city in Lombardy, Italy. Currently, they play in the Serie B league. This happened after they moved down from the top league, Serie A, in the 2022–23 season.

The Story of Cremonese Football

Cremonese through the ages 2023
Cremonese's journey through Italy's football leagues since 1929–30.

Cremonese started in the very first season of Italy's top league, Serie A, back in 1929–30. After that, the team spent a long time in lower leagues. But in the late 1970s, things started to change!

By 1984, they made it back to Serie A. They had short stays in the top league in 1984–85, 1989–90, and 1991–92.

Winning the Anglo-Italian Cup

Cremonese had a fantastic time in the 1992–93 Anglo-Italian Cup. They beat Bari 4–1 in the semi-final match. Then, they won the final 3–1 against Derby County at the famous old Wembley Stadium. The goals for Cremonese were scored by Corrado Verdelli, Riccardo Maspero, and Andrea Tentoni.

Back to Serie A and Beyond

Under coach Luigi Simoni, Cremonese returned to Serie A for the 1993–94 season. They had strong players like defenders Luigi Gualco and Corrado Verdelli, midfielder Riccardo Maspero, and forwards Andrea Tentoni and Matjaž Florijančič. The team did well, finishing 10th in 1993–94. However, they were moved down to a lower league in the 1995–96 season.

After this, the club faced some tough times. They dropped to Serie C2 by 2000. But they fought hard and earned back-to-back promotions, reaching Serie B by 2005. Even with former player Giovanni Dall'Igna returning, Cremonese went back down to Serie C1 in the 2005–06 season.

Cremonese kept trying to get back to Serie B. They almost made it in 2009–10 but lost in the play-off final. Finally, in 2017, they succeeded! In the 2021–22 Serie B season, Cremonese finished second. This earned them a promotion back to the 2022–23 Serie A! Even though they moved up, their coach Fabio Pecchia decided to leave.
