US Open of Surfing facts for kids
The U.S. Open of Surfing is a super exciting surfing contest that happens every summer in Huntington Beach, California. It lasts for a whole week! You can usually find it happening right next to the famous Huntington Beach Pier.
This event is a really big deal because it's part of how surfers qualify for the World Surf League. It's actually the biggest surfing competition in the whole world! A company called IMG has owned it since the year 2000.
During the U.S. Open, special ceremonies take place. Famous surfers get honored and added to the Surfing Walk of Fame and the Surfers' Hall of Fame. Both of these cool spots are right across the street from the pier.

History of the U.S. Open
The U.S. Open of Surfing has had a few different names over the years! It first started in 1959 and was called the West Coast Surfing Championship.
- In 1964, it changed its name to the United States Surfing Championships.
- Then, in 1982, it became known as the OP Pro. This was because of its sponsor, a company called Ocean Pacific.
- Finally, in 1994, it got its current name: the U.S. Open of Surfing.
The contest used to happen around Labor Day weekend. But after some crowd problems in 1986 and again in 2013, the event owners decided to change the date. They also decided to focus more on the surfing sport itself. This meant they stopped having other events like free concerts.
This big surfing event brings a lot of money to the local area. It adds about $21.5 million to the economy of Orange County. And about $16.4 million of that stays right in Huntington Beach. Nearly 500,000 people come to watch the event each year!

Awards and Honors
Every year during the U.S. Open, special awards are given to important people in surfing. These people are added to the Surfing Walk of Fame and the Surfers' Hall of Fame.
The Walk of Fame has cool plaques set into the sidewalk. The Hall of Fame has handprints of famous surfers. Both are located across the street from each other and across Pacific Coast Highway from the Huntington Beach Pier.
Surfing Walk of Fame
The Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach adds new members each year. They have different groups for the awards: surf pioneers, surfing champions, local heroes, surf culture contributors, woman of the year, and an honor roll.
Here's how people qualify for some of these awards:
- A surf champion must have won world championships or big events in Huntington Beach.
- The Woman of the Year is chosen by votes from people in the other award groups.
- Local Hero award winners have lived in Huntington Beach for at least ten years or went to high school there. They also need to have been finalists in surfing championships, helped the local surfing culture, been surf pioneers in the city, or won the Huntington Beach City Championships.
