Discover Uisken: A Small Scottish Village
A Look Back in Time
Uisken was once a group of small settlements. This was before the Highland Clearances. The Clearances were a time when many people had to leave their homes. After this, Uisken became a place for fishing and crofting. Crofting means farming small pieces of land.
A small dock, called Port Uisken, was built. A road also connected it to the steamer pier at Bunessan. The Duke of Argyll helped pay for these improvements. However, the dock soon fell apart. But crofting continued. In the early 1920s, there were seven crofts. Today, three crofts are still being worked.
Interesting Landmarks
You can see a cairn on the eastern skyline. A cairn is a pile of stones. People believe this cairn marks an old funeral path. Coffins were carried along this path. They were taken to an old chapel at Scoor.
There is also a large standing stone nearby. It is on the same ridge as the cairn. It is about 500 meters north of the cairn. However, you cannot see this standing stone from Uisken itself.
Uisken's Population
Uisken is a very small village. In 2014, its population was just 6 people.
