History of Ullin
Ullin started as a stop along the Illinois Central Railroad in the mid-1850s. This railroad was very important for travel and trade back then.
How Ullin Got Its Name
There are a couple of ideas about how Ullin got its name. Some people think it was named after a hero from old Gaelic stories. This hero often appeared in poems by a writer named Ossian.
Another idea is that the village was named after its first postmaster, Samuel Ulen. A post office opened in Ullin in 1856, and the village was officially mapped out the next year. Ullin became an incorporated village in 1900.

Ullin is found at coordinates 37.277861 degrees North and -89.181533 degrees West. It is located near the Cache River, which is north of Cairo.
Natural Surroundings
To the east of Ullin, you can find the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge. This is a special area set aside to protect wildlife and nature. Interstate 57, a major highway, runs along the eastern edge of the village.
