What Does the Grant Home Look Like?
The house was designed in a style called Italianate. This style was popular for buildings at the time. Italianate homes often have clear, rectangular shapes. They also have roofs that are not very steep.
You might see balconies with decorative railings. These often extend over covered porches. The edges of the roof, called eaves, also stick out. These are all common features of the Italianate style.
Statues at the Home
A statue of First Lady Julia Grant is on the grounds of the home. It was placed there in 2006. Julia Grant was Ulysses S. Grant's wife.
You can also see a statue of Ulysses S. Grant nearby. It is in Galena's Grant Park. This park is visible from the house grounds.
Visiting the Grant Home
The U.S. Grant Home is located on Bouthillier Street. It is owned by the state of Illinois. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency manages it. It works like a historic house museum.
Inside, the rooms are set up to look like they did in the mid-1860s. Many of the items inside actually belonged to the Grant family. People who work there give tours. They dress in old-fashioned clothes from that time. They share stories about Grant's life. This includes his time in the Civil War and as president. There is also another building next to the house. It has exhibits about Grant and the history of the home.
A Special Historic Place
The Grant Home is a very important historical site. It was named a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960. This means it is a place of great national importance. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. This program helps protect important historical places.
The Grant House is also part of the Galena Historic District. This district was created in 1969. It includes more than 1,000 other historic buildings.
