Umar Shaikh Mirza II (Persian: عمر شیخ میرزا) was an important ruler from 1469 to 1494. He governed the Fergana Valley, a fertile region in Central Asia. He was the fourth son of Abu Sa'id Mirza, who was the emperor of the Timurid Empire. This empire covered areas that are now Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and eastern Iran.
Umar Shaikh Mirza II had several wives. His first and most important wife was Qutlugh Nigar Khanum. She was a princess from the Chagatai Khanate and the daughter of Yunus Khan. Umar Shaikh had three sons and five daughters. His oldest son was Babur Mirza, whose mother was Qutlugh Nigar Khanum. Babur Mirza later became very famous. He founded the Mughal Empire in 1526 and was the first Mughal Emperor of India. Umar Shaikh's other sons were Jahangir Mirza II and Nasir Mirza.
Umar Shaikh Mirza II died in an unusual accident on June 10, 1494. He was in a dovecote (a building for pigeons) at Aksi fort in North Fergana. The building collapsed, and he fell to his death. After his death, his eleven-year-old son, Babur, became the new ruler of Fergana. Babur later wrote that his father was a very religious Muslim who always performed his five daily prayers.

About His Family
His Mother, Shah Sultan Begum
Umar Shaikh's mother was not clearly named in old historical writings. Even in the Baburnama, which is his son Babur's autobiography, her name is not directly stated. This is a bit unusual because Babur often wrote about the mothers of his other relatives.
However, Babur did mention a woman named Shah Sultan Begum (who died in 1501) several times. The way he wrote about her suggests she was Umar Shaikh's mother. Most historians today agree with this idea. We don't know much about Shah Sultan Begum's own family background.
