Umi Garrett is an amazing American classical pianist. She was born on August 15, 2000. Umi started playing the piano when she was very young. She has performed all over the world.
Umi's Early Piano Journey
Umi Garrett began playing the piano at just four years old. She learned from talented teachers, Itoe Akimoto and Yoshie Akimoto. Now, she studies with John Perry. Umi was the youngest performer ever at the Killington Music Festival in Vermont. She also attended the Sydney International Piano Masterclass Festival in 2012. Besides piano, Umi also plays the violin. She even started ballet when she was two and a half!
Umi's Amazing Performances
In August 2009, Umi performed in Luxembourg and Germany. She played both solo and with other musicians. In 2010, Umi won the Second International Chopin Competition. She got perfect scores from all the judges! This win led her to perform at the famous Carnegie Hall.
Also in 2010, Umi played with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. This performance was part of NPR's From The Top show. She made her orchestra debut in December 2009. She played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 with the Desert Symphony. At just nine years old, Umi performed in China with the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra. She also received a scholarship for MusicFest Perugia.
In 2011, Umi performed at the Assisi nel Mondo Festival. She has played with many orchestras. These include the Charlotte Symphony and the Indiana Chamber Orchestra. In March 2012, Umi was the youngest performer at The International Piano Stars Festival in Latvia. She returned to the Assisi nel Mondo Festival that same year.
Umi created a special concert series called "Kizuna Concert Series." She used this series to visit people in Tohoku, Japan. This area was affected by a tsunami in 2011. She gave four concerts there in March 2013. In 2015, Umi performed with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra. This concert celebrated the 70th anniversary of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan.
In March 2020, Umi won Fourth Prize at the US National Chopin Piano Competition. She shared this award with Chelsea Guo. Since September 2018, Umi has been a student at Juilliard. She is in a special program with Columbia University. She studies with Matti Raekallio and Hung Kuan Chen.
