Union City is a town located in Canadian County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,645 people lived there. This was a 19.6% increase from the year 2000. Union City is part of the larger Oklahoma City area.

History of Union City

The town of Union City started in 1890. Before that, in 1889, a post office opened for a community called Union. The town grew when the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway arrived. This railway was later taken over by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad in 1891.

The town's economy was mostly based on farming. Within four years, Union City had three places to store grain. It also had a store that sold farm machines.

The 1973 Tornado Event

On May 24, 1973, a very strong tornado hit the Union City area. This tornado was rated F4, which means it was extremely powerful. It was the first tornado that scientists studied closely as part of storm chasing research. The National Severe Storms Laboratory sent many storm chasers to watch the tornado. They filmed its entire life cycle to learn more about how tornadoes form and behave.

Geography of Union City

Union City is in the southern part of Canadian County. To its east is Oklahoma City. To the north, it borders parts of El Reno. To the south, it borders Grady County, which includes the town of Minco. The Canadian River forms the southern edge of Union City. It also marks the county line.

U.S. Route 81 goes right through the middle of Union City. If you go north on this road, it's about 7.5 miles to Interstate 40. It's about 10 miles to El Reno. If you go south, it's about 6 miles to Minco. Oklahoma State Highway 152 goes east from Union City. It's about 12 miles to Mustang. Downtown Oklahoma City is about 28 miles to the east.

The United States Census Bureau says that Union City covers about 56.59 square miles (147.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 56.12 square miles (146.6 square kilometers). The rest, about 0.47 square miles (1.2 square kilometers), is water.

Union City's economy still relies on farming. It provides goods and services for the local agriculture industry. One grain elevator is still in operation today.
