United Nations Security Council Resolution 48 was a special decision made by the Security Council on April 23, 1948. This resolution asked everyone involved in the fighting in Mandatory Palestine to follow an earlier agreement, United Nations Security Council Resolution 46, which called for a stop to the fighting. To help make this happen, Resolution 48 created a special group called the Truce Commission for Palestine. This group's job was to help the Security Council make sure the truce (a temporary stop to fighting) was actually happening.

Understanding Resolution 48
What is a UN Security Council Resolution?
The United Nations Security Council is a very important part of the United Nations. It is in charge of keeping peace and safety around the world. When the Security Council makes a "resolution," it's like making a big decision or a rule that countries are expected to follow. These resolutions are meant to solve problems and prevent wars.
Why Was Resolution 48 Needed?
In 1948, there was a lot of fighting in a region called Palestine. This was part of what became known as the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. The United Nations wanted to stop the violence and help bring peace. They had already passed Resolution 46, which asked for a truce. Resolution 48 was made to help make sure that truce actually happened.
What Did Resolution 48 Ask For?
Resolution 48 had two main goals:
- It told all the groups involved in the fighting to follow the rules of Resolution 46. This meant they needed to stop their attacks.
- It set up the Truce Commission for Palestine. This commission was a group of people who would work with the Security Council. Their job was to help make sure the truce was kept and to report back on what was happening on the ground.
How Was Resolution 48 Voted On?
When the Security Council voted on Resolution 48, eight countries voted "yes" to approve it. No countries voted "no." However, three countries chose to "abstain." To "abstain" means they did not vote either yes or no. The countries that abstained were Colombia, the Ukrainian SSR, and the Soviet Union. Even with abstentions, the resolution was adopted because enough countries voted "yes."
