History of UTTC
How UTTC Started
UTTC was started in 1969 by Native American tribes in North Dakota. The United Tribes of North Dakota Development Corporation officially created UTTC. The college is located in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Becoming an Accredited College
In 1978, UTTC applied to become an "accredited" school. This means it wanted to be officially recognized for its quality education. By 1982, UTTC became a fully accredited vocational technical school. In 1987, it was allowed to offer its first associate degree programs. These are two-year college degrees.
Land-Grant Status and Online Learning
In 1994, UTTC was named a land-grant college. This means it gets special support to offer education, especially in areas like agriculture and science. In 2003, UTTC made history. It became the first tribal college to offer online classes that were officially recognized.
Who Owns and Runs UTTC?
UTTC is owned and operated by five Tribal Nations. These tribes are located in or partly in North Dakota. They include:
- Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate
- Spirit Lake Nation
- Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
- Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation) of the Fort Berthold Reservation
- Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa
What Can You Study at UTTC?
UTTC offers many different programs. Students can earn certificates, which show they have special skills. They can also get two-year degrees (associate degrees) or four-year degrees. There are over 20 different areas of study to choose from.
Student Population at UTTC
Most of the students at UTTC are American Indian or Alaska Native. In fact, about 96% of the students are from these groups. This shows how important UTTC is to tribal communities.
Working with Other Colleges
UTTC is part of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). This group helps tribal colleges work together. They aim to make tribal nations stronger and improve the lives of American Indians and Alaska Natives. UTTC helps people in areas where it might be hard to get a college education.
