The name Unley comes from the family name of the wife of Thomas Whistler, who owned land here around 1857.

Unley's Past: A Look at History

Before European settlers arrived, the land where Unley now stands was home to the Kaurna people. They are an Aboriginal nation, also known as the Adelaide Plains tribe.

European settlement began in the mid-1800s. Most new arrivals came from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Some also came from German-speaking areas. The original forests were cleared to make way for farms. People raised sheep and cattle, and planted vineyards and orchards.

Over time, Unley grew into a busy shopping and business area. It's very close to Adelaide's city centre. Today, Unley also has a large Greek Australian community. The Unley Post Office first opened its doors on January 17, 1850. The Glenelg tram line runs past the northwest edge of the suburb. Another tram line used to run along Unley Road until the 1950s.
