Early Mentions of Untervaz
Untervaz is a very old settlement. It was first written about between the years 768 and 800. Back then, it was called Uaze.
Later, between 801 and 850, it was known as Vazes. Then, from 1210 to 1300, people called it Vatz inferiore. These different names show how the town's name changed over many centuries.

Places to See
Neuburg Castle Ruins
The ruins of Neuburg Castle are a very important historical site in Switzerland. It is listed as a national heritage site.
The castle was first built in the late 1200s. It was owned by different noble families over time. In 1496, the Bishop of Chur bought it. Later, in 1577, the people of Untervaz bought the castle. It was left empty and started to fall apart in the 16th century.
Rappenstein Castle
Another interesting castle near Untervaz is Höhlenburg Rappenstein. This castle is special because it was built right into a cave on the side of a mountain!
