Zizers (Romansh: Zezras) is a small town, also called a municipality, in the Landquart Region of Swiss canton of Graubünden. It's a historic place where Zita of Bourbon-Parma, who was an Empress of Austria-Hungary, lived and passed away.

History of Zizers

Zizers is quite old! We first find it mentioned in old writings way back in the year 824. Back then, it was called Zizuris.

Geography and Landscape

Zizers covers an area of about 11 square kilometers (around 4.2 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 40%, is used for farming. Another large part, about 38%, is covered by forests.

About 14.5% of the land has buildings and roads on it. The rest, about 8.4%, is land that can't be used for building or farming.

Zizers is located in an important spot. It sits on the main road that goes through the Rhine river valley. This makes it easy to travel to and from Zizers.

For a long time, another town called Mastrils was actually part of Zizers. But in 1854, Mastrils became its own separate municipality. Later, in 1913, some small areas like Oberzollbruck and Russhof became part of Igis.

Population and People

Zizers has a population of over 3,000 people. About 14% of the people living in Zizers are from other countries.

The population has been growing steadily. Between 2010 and 2015, the number of people living in Zizers increased by more than 5%.

  • Young People: About 20.7% of the population are children and teenagers (under 19 years old).
  • Adults: Most people, about 61.7%, are adults between 20 and 64 years old.
  • Seniors: About 17.6% of the population are seniors (over 64 years old).

Most people in Zizers speak German, which is about 88.7% of the population. Italian is the second most common language, spoken by about 3.2% of the people.
