Upton got its name from Camp Upton. This was a U.S. Army base that was active during two important times.

Camp Upton was first used from 1917 to 1920. This was during World War I.
Camp Upton in World War II

Powering Homes with Solar Energy
Upton is home to a very large solar power plant. It is called the Long Island Solar Farm (LISF).
How the Solar Farm Works
The LISF has 164,312 photovoltaic solar panels. These panels turn sunlight into electricity. It is the biggest solar farm of its kind in the eastern United States.
Solar Power Benefits
This solar farm makes enough electricity for about 4,500 homes. It also helps the environment by stopping over 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from going into the air each year. Because of its great work, the LISF won an award for being the Best Photovoltaic Project of the Year.
