Urederra facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Urederra is a special place in Navarre, Spain. Its name comes from the Basque language, meaning "beautiful water." It's where water naturally flows out from underground, forming a river. This water comes from a huge underground water storage area, called an aquifer, inside the rocky karst mountains of Urbasa.

The Urederra River starts in the Urbasa-Andía Natural Park, close to the village of Baquedano. It flows for about 19 kilometers before joining the Ega River. The Ega River then flows into the larger Ebro. The main source of the Urederra is a tall cliff, 713 meters high. Water gushes out here, creating a waterfall over 100 meters tall! Over many years, this powerful water has shaped the rocky landscape around it.

Right behind the main waterfall, you'll find many smaller waterfalls and beautiful pools. The water in these pools is a stunning turquoise color, which is a famous feature of the Urederra River. This unique color and the many small waterfalls are all thanks to the special type of rock called karst. Karst rock allows water to seep through its cracks and then burst out from deep inside the earth.

It's often suggested to walk along the path closer to the river on your way there. Then, you can return on the path that goes a bit higher up and further from the river.
