Uttarkashi District (which means 'North Kashi') is a special area in the Uttarakhand state of northern India. It is also known as Uttar Kashi District. The main city and center of this district is Uttarkashi city.
This district is located high up in the amazing Himalayas mountains. Two very important rivers, the Ganges and Yamuna, start their journey here. Because of these rivers, thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit this area every year. The town of Uttarkashi is on the main road to Gangotri. It has many Hindu temples and is a very important place for religious journeys.
