Uwe Boll (born 22 June 1965) is a German filmmaker. He became well-known in the 2000s for making movies based on popular video games. These films were shown in theaters but often didn't do well with critics or at the box office. For example, his 2005 movie Alone in the Dark is often called one of the worst films ever made.
Later, in the 2010s, most of Boll's movies were released directly to home video. He stopped making films in 2016 to open a restaurant. However, he returned to filmmaking in 2022. His movies are funded by his own companies, Boll KG and Event Film Productions.

Early life
Uwe Boll was born in Wermelskirchen, Germany. He went to the University of Cologne and also studied at the University of Siegen. He earned a special degree called a PhD in 1994.
Boll decided he wanted to make movies when he was just ten years old. This happened after he watched the film Mutiny on the Bounty, which starred Marlon Brando.
Career
Making films
Uwe Boll's first two big movies were the horror film Blackwoods and the drama Heart of America. He directed both of these and helped write them.
He became famous for making movies that were loosely based on video games. He directed and produced many of these, including House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, and Far Cry.
In his 2007 film Seed, Boll used footage to highlight the film's dark themes. He also promised to give 2.5 percent of the money he earned from Seed to PETA.
In 2010, a documentary film about Boll was released. It was called Raging Boll and was directed by Dan West. The movie showed at the Austin Film Festival in October 2010.
In 2011, Boll released Blubberella. This movie was a funny look at superhero films and also made fun of Marvel's MCU movies. Boll said his jokes about the MCU were part of his comedy style.
Boll had plans for a fourth BloodRayne movie. It would have been set in modern times and shown the character trying to live a normal life.
In 2013, Boll announced he wanted to make a sequel to his movie Postal. He tried to raise money for it through a website called Kickstarter, but the plan was canceled.
In October 2016, Uwe Boll announced he was stopping filmmaking. He said this was mainly because sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs were going down. He mentioned that he had been using his own money to make his films since 2005.
Even though he retired from directing, he continued to work as a film producer in 2017. In 2018, he said he wanted to return to making films and had sent ideas to Netflix. However, he didn't want to pay for the projects himself anymore.
In October 2020, Boll decided to start making films again. He announced that Germany in Winter would be his next project. In 2022, he shared plans to direct and produce Ness, about the later life of Eliot Ness, and an action thriller called 12 Hours.
In February 2023, the magazine Variety reported that Boll would direct and produce a crime drama called First Shift. This movie follows two different NYPD police officers on their first day working together.
Uwe Boll appeared as himself in the 2023 Romanian film Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. As of 2023, Uwe Boll's estimated worth is about $10 million.
How films are paid for
Uwe Boll's films often did not earn much money at the box office in the United States and other countries. For example, House of the Dead cost $12 million to make but only earned $5.73 million when it first came out. Alone in the Dark cost $20 million but made $5.1 million.
In 2005, some people criticized how Boll funded his movies. He explained that he used a special German tax rule. This rule meant that if you invested in a movie in Germany, the government would give you back about fifty percent of your money. This tax rule was changed in 2006. Overall, Uwe Boll's directed films have earned $41.3 million around the world.
Books he wrote
Uwe Boll has written six books:
- Wie man in Deutschland einen Film drehen muss (How one must make a movie in Germany)
- Die Gattung Serie und ihre Genres (Genus Series and its Genres), which is about different types of TV shows.
- Warum sich keiner mehr zu sagen traut was wirklich ist (Why everybody is scared to say the truth)
- Tabula Rasa (Uwe's biography)
- Uwe Boll Raw: A Memoir
Video games
Boll also appeared in the 2011 video game Postal III.
Restaurants
After he stopped making films, Uwe Boll started working in the restaurant business. He loved good food and had visited many top-rated restaurants around the world. He even made short videos reviewing restaurants.
In 2015, Boll opened the Bauhaus Restaurant in Vancouver, Canada. He noticed there wasn't much German food in the city. He hired Stefan Hartmann, a chef who had earned a special award called a Michelin star for his own restaurant in Berlin.
The Bauhaus Restaurant has received good reviews from food critics. In 2016, it was ranked 37th on the list of Canada's 100 Best Restaurants. It was also one of only three Canadian restaurants listed in The World's 50 Best Restaurants Discovery Series in 2017. Boll joked about his success, saying, "It's interesting, right? I had to open up a restaurant to get good reviews."
In 2018, Boll and his wife Natalie started the Bauhaus Group to grow their business. They bought the Blenheim Pub in Vancouver and changed it into a family-friendly restaurant. This restaurant later closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They also planned to open a second Bauhaus Restaurant in Toronto and a third in China.
In 2020, his restaurant won a gold award for Best European Restaurant at the Vancouver Magazine Awards.
Personal life
Uwe Boll lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his family. Even though he has lived in Canada for many years, he is still a German citizen. He married Canadian film producer Natalia Tudge in 2014. They have a son together, and he also has a stepson.
