History of Vaiden
Vaiden was started around 1857. It was named after Dr. Cowles Mead Vaiden. He was a local doctor, a farmer, and someone who gave a lot to the community. In the late 1850s, Dr. Vaiden allowed a railroad to be built through his land. This railroad connected Jackson, the state capital, with Memphis, Tennessee.
When the railroad was almost finished in 1857, people living in a nearby Native American town called Shongalo moved. They moved closer to the new railroad for easier access. The new town was named Vaiden to honor Dr. Vaiden. It became a regular stop on the train line. Because of this, it was chosen as the county seat for Carroll County. Vaiden officially became a town on February 10, 1860.
Later, as more people moved into the county, some wanted a county seat closer to the Mississippi River. So, Carrollton was also made a county seat. The main county courthouse is now in Carrollton.

Vaiden used to have its own schools: Hathorne Elementary School and Vaiden High School. Vaiden High School joined with J. Z. George High School in 1999.
In 2006, Hathorne Elementary had 141 students and 21 staff members. The school district thought about closing it. The mayor of Vaiden, George Tubreville, did not agree with this idea. However, because Vaiden High had closed and fewer students were attending Hathorne, the district decided to close the elementary school. Hathorne Elementary closed in 2010, and the building was no longer used by the district. In 2014, a group called Central Mississippi Inc. bought the school building. They planned to start a Head Start program there.
