Vails Gate: A Look Back in Time
Vails Gate has always been considered a part of the larger New Windsor area. In the 1800s, it became known as Vail's Gate. This name came from John D. Vail, who used to be the postmaster and managed a tollgate on the Blooming Grove Turnpike. Before that, it was sometimes called Tooker's Gate for a similar reason.
John D. Vail was the first postmaster for the New Windsor post office, which opened in 1850. It was first called the Mortonville Post Office. Later, its name was changed to Vails Gate Post Office. This is why the apostrophe was eventually dropped from the name, making it "Vails Gate." There were ideas to change the hamlet's name to Mortonville, after the Morton family who lived in the Ellison House, but this never happened.
