What Does Valdagno Mean?
The name "Valdagno" comes from the Italian words "valle dell'Agno". This means "valley of the Agno". Historian Giovanni Mantese thinks the name might come from the Latin words Vallis Alnei. This means "valley of the ontano tree".
Where is Valdagno Located?
Valdagno is built along the Agno River. The town gets its name from this river. It's in a valley surrounded by hills. These hills are part of the Piccole Dolomiti and the Alti Lessini mountain ranges.
The river Agno was very important for the town. It gave water to the people. It also helped industries grow, especially textile factories. The valley runs from west to east. This allows winds from the Adriatic Sea to affect the weather.
A main road, SP. 246, goes through the town. This road connects Valdagno to Recoaro Terme in the north. It also links to Cornedo Vicentino in the south. The old part of town is a central spot for everyone living there.
A Quick Look at Valdagno's History
Valdagno has been around for a very long time. It was first mentioned in the year 861. In 1184, a document shows it was given to the Trissino family. This was a gift from the bishop of Vicenza.
Two castles were built on hills facing each other. One was called Valdagno castle. The other was Panisacco Castle. But the city of Vicenza soon wanted control of Valdagno. The Trissino family then teamed up with the Scaligers to protect it.
In 1291, during a war with Verona, the Republic of Venice took over Valdagno. They held it until 1340. In 1377, Bernabò Visconti attacked and looted the town. In 1404, it went back to the Venetians. From 1434 to 1439, the Visconti family occupied it. Then Gian Giorgio Trissino brought it back under Venice's control.
Between 1510 and 1514, Valdagno was badly damaged many times. This happened during the War of the League of Cambrai. The armies of Maximilian I caused the destruction. After 1797, when the Republic of Venice fell, Valdagno was ruled by France and Austria. It became part of the new Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Valdagno is the birthplace of Gaetano Marzotto. He was a leader in the textile industry. He founded the Marzotto company. This company helped Valdagno become an important industrial town.
Places to See in Valdagno
The Historic Town Center
Most of Valdagno's design comes from the 18th century. This was during the time of the Republic of Venice.
You can find the Santa Maria delle Grazie convent from the 16th century. To get there, enter Valdagno from Regina Margherita street. Then head towards the historic center. A short walk from the old convent is Villa Valle. This villa used to be called Orsini-Marzotto. Now it's the Centro Culturale Comunale "Gaetano Marzotto". It has a public library and a municipal modern art gallery. Villa Valle is considered the most important villa in Valdagno. This is because of its cultural and artistic value.
The main hall of the villa is very large. It connects different parts of the villa. This is typical of old Venetian buildings. It's as tall as two floors. Twelve windows in the ceiling let in light. The hall has four doors with triangular tops. These doors have sculptures of the seasons. They also show the four main elements: earth, fire, water, and air. On the shorter sides of the hall, there are two wooden balconies. These connect the two wings of the villa on the first floor.
Other interesting places near Villa Valle include:
- Villa Gajanigo Barbieri: This villa has a neoclassical style. You can only see it through a fence. It was designed in the late 18th century by Carlo Barrera.
- Villa Zanuso: This villa is now called Villa Fontanari. It was built in the second half of the 19th century.
The Duomo (Main Church)
The Duomo of St. Clemente was built in the 18th century. It is on the right side of the Agno River. Inside the sacristy, there is a large stone artwork. It's called the Ancona of Saint Clemente. It has the date "1445" on it. The Duomo also has nine valuable bells. They are used for Veronese ringing style.
