Valeo Confectionery Limited is a British company that makes sweets and candies. Its main office is in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England. The company was once known as Tangerine Confectionery Limited and Toms Confectionery Limited.

Since 2006, Valeo Confectionery has grown a lot by buying other companies. This made it one of the biggest independent sweet makers in Europe. It also became the fourth largest sweet maker in the United Kingdom. The company has six factories in different cities: Blackburn, Blackpool, Cleckheaton, Liverpool, Pontefract, and York.

History of Valeo Confectionery

How Tangerine Confectionery Started

In January 2006, Toms Confectionery changed its name to Tangerine Confectionery. This happened after a new management team bought the company from Toms International of Denmark. The UK part of Tom's had grown by buying three older sweet companies: Taveners, Daintee, and Parrs. These purchases happened between 1992 and 2001.

At first, the company mainly made sweets for other brands in England. In January 2006, Tangerine Confectionery officially bought the Taveners, Daintee, and Parrs businesses. In April of that year, a magazine called The Grocer said it was the best own-label sweet supplier in the UK.

In August 2006, the company bought the sweet-making part of Burton's Foods, which was based in Blackpool. This deal increased the company's sales to £60 million. It made Tangerine Confectionery the largest independent sweet company in the UK.

Growth and Changes

In January 2008, Tangerine Confectionery bought Monkhill Confectionery from Cadbury plc. This deal was worth £58 million. It included factories in Cleckheaton, Pontefract, and York. It also added popular sweet brands like Barratts, Sharps of York, Jameson's, Trebor Basset Mints, Butterkist, and Pascall.

In April 2009, the company was listed as 23rd in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Profit Track 100. This list, published by The Sunday Times, shows the UK's private companies with the fastest growing profits. Tangerine was the highest-ranked company from North West England. In August 2009, 150 of its products received a special quality approval called the Halal Seal of Approval.

In 2010, a safety issue at its Poole factory led to a large fine for the company. The factory later closed in 2013. In 2012, Tangerine Confectionery bought Smith Kendon, a company that makes York Fruits jelly sweets. However, in February 2013, the company's Halal approval was removed. In 2014, Tangerine announced it would close its Clifton Road factory in Blackpool. Its other Blackpool factory in Vicarage Lane stayed open.

Becoming Valeo Confectionery

In August 2018, a company called Valeo Foods announced that it had bought Tangerine Confectionery. In December 2019, Tangerine Confectionery officially changed its name to Valeo Confectionery.
