Valerie Miles was born in New York in 1963. She is a publisher, writer, and translator. She also helped start Granta en español, a Spanish version of the famous literary magazine. Valerie is known for helping Spanish and Latin American literature reach English-speaking readers. She also brings American and British authors to Spain and Latin America.
Currently, she is a co-director for Granta en español. She also helps with the Spanish version of The New York Review of Books. Valerie Miles's Life
Valerie Miles was born in New York but grew up in Pennsylvania. In 1990, she moved to Spain. There, she started writing about British and American books for La Vanguardia newspaper in 1994.
Since then, Valerie has written many articles, interviews, and reviews. She writes about books in both English and Spanish. Her work has appeared in newspapers like ABC, La Nación, Reforma, and El País.
Her Work in Publishing
In 1999, Valerie started working as an editor for Debolsillo. This company is part of Random House Spain. By May 2001, she became a publishing director at Emecé Editores. This company is part of the Planeta Group.
At Emecé, she helped publish or promote Spanish translations of many writers. These included John Cheever, Richard Yates, Yasunari Kawabata, and Lydia Davis. In 2006, she moved to Alfaguara. There, she published authors like John Banville and Joyce Carol Oates.
From 2008 to 2012, she was the publishing director of Duomo Ediciones. This company is part of an Italian group. She published books by young Spanish-language authors. She also brought English-language writers like David Mitchell and William Boyd to Spain and Latin America. In 2013, she was named one of the "Most Influential Professionals in Publishing" at the Buenos Aires Book Fair.
Granta Magazine
Valerie Miles helped start Granta en español in 2003 with Aurelio Major. This magazine has been supported by several publishing houses. It is now published by Galaxia Gutenberg in Barcelona, Spain.
The magazine has published many issues. One famous issue was "The Best of Young Spanish-language Novelists." This issue highlighted new and exciting writers.
Valerie Miles's Writings
