Valley View Mall is a large indoor shopping mall located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It's a popular spot for shopping and fun in the area. The mall has 73 different stores, restaurants, and a food court where you can grab a bite to eat.
The main stores, called "anchor stores," are Barnes & Noble and JCPenney. There are also three empty anchor spots that used to be Sears and two Herberger's stores. Valley View Mall serves people from three different states, reaching about 50 miles around the shopping center. You can find it just south of Interstate 90, in one of La Crosse's busiest business areas.
Mall History: How It Grew
Valley View Mall first opened its doors in July 1980. Back then, it had four main anchor stores and more than 40 other shops. In 1985, the big anchor stores were Dayton's, Herberger's, Sears, and J.C. Penney.
The mall got a fresh new look in 1991. Then, in 2001, a special Food Court was added, giving shoppers more choices for meals and snacks. In late 2006, a large Barnes & Noble bookstore opened, adding a great place to find books and gifts.
Changes Over the Years
On January 4, 2017, Macy's announced that its store at the mall would be closing. This store used to be the old Dayton's. It closed on March 26, 2017.
Later that year, on April 26, 2017, it was shared that Herberger's would move into the bigger space where Macy's used to be. The new, larger Herberger's store opened on September 14, 2017.
However, on April 18, 2018, sad news came for Herberger's. Its parent company was closing all its stores. The Herberger's store at Valley View Mall closed on August 29, 2018.
Soon after, on August 22, 2018, Sears also announced that its store would be closing. The Sears store closed in November 2018. After these closures, Barnes & Noble and JCPenney became the only two remaining anchor stores at the mall.
Recent Times
On March 17, 2020, Valley View Mall had to close for a while because of the coronavirus pandemic. But don't worry, it has since reopened and is ready for shoppers again!
