Valverde is a town and a "municipality" (like a local government area) in the Canary Islands of Spain. Its name means "green valley" in Spanish. It is located on the northeast side of El Hierro, which is one of the Canary Islands.
Valverde is the official capital of El Hierro. It is the smallest capital in the Canary Islands. It is also the only capital not located right by the sea. The island's airport and seaport are a few kilometers away on the east coast.
The central part of Valverde has lots of green areas for animals to graze. There are also small farms. As you go higher up, you will find pine forests and "cloud forests." Cloud forests are special forests that are often covered in mist.
The areas closer to the coast are dry. They mostly have scrubland (bushes and small trees) and thin grassland. You can also see many signs of volcanism here. This includes several cinder cones (small hills made from volcanic ash) and areas where lava once flowed.

Valverde has a tropical desert climate. This means it's usually warm all year round. Winters are mild, with an average temperature of about 18.8 degrees Celsius in January. It rarely gets colder than 10 degrees Celsius. The coldest temperature ever recorded was 8.0 degrees Celsius on January 16, 1981. You won't find any frost here! Most of the rain falls during the winter months.
Summers are warm, with September being the warmest month, averaging 24.1 degrees Celsius. It doesn't rain much in summer, usually only 0 to 2 millimeters. Because Valverde is close to the sea, extreme hot or cold temperatures are rare. The highest temperature ever recorded was 34.2 degrees Celsius on October 16, 1983.
Valverde town is about 571 meters above sea level. However, El Hierro airport is much lower, at only 32 meters above sea level. This big difference in height can make the weather quite different between the town and the airport.
