James Gabriel Keogh (born on 1 December 1987), known as Vance Joy, is an Australian singer and songwriter. He also plays music and used to be an Australian rules football player. He is most famous for his popular song "Riptide", which came out in 2013.
Vance Joy signed a big music deal with Atlantic Records in 2013. He released his first collection of songs, called an EP, titled God Loves You When You're Dancing in March 2013. His song "Riptide" was voted the number one song on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100 list.
His first full album, Dream Your Life Away, was released in September 2014. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015, he won the award for Best Male Artist. His second album, Nation of Two, came out in 2018. His third album, In Our Own Sweet Time, was released in June 2022.

Early Life and School
James Gabriel Keogh was born on December 1, 1987. His dad worked with computers, and his mom was an English teacher at a high school. His grandparents on his dad's side moved to Australia from Ireland.
He went to St. Patrick's Primary School in Murrumbeena, Melbourne. He was the school captain at St Kevin's College in Toorak, where he finished in 2005. Later, he studied at Monash University. He earned degrees in Arts and Law.
Football Career
Before he became a musician, Vance Joy was a good Australian rules football player. In 2008 and 2009, he played as a defender for the Coburg Football Club. This team is part of the Victorian Football League. In 2008, he won an award for being the best new player.
Vance Joy explained why he chose music over football. He said he wasn't quite good enough to play in the top league, the AFL. He felt he had reached his best as a football player. He also mentioned that his heart wasn't fully in football. He saw it as something he did before he started writing his own songs.
Music Journey
2013: First Songs and "Riptide"
On January 21, 2013, Vance Joy released his first song, "From Afar". Then, on March 22, 2013, he released his first EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing. The song "Riptide" became very popular on Australian radio. It reached number 6 on the ARIA Singles Chart. It was also used in a GoPro TV ad in the USA.
"Riptide" became a huge hit around the world. It helped Vance Joy become famous. It also became the song that stayed on the ARIA Charts for the longest time ever. The song was inspired by a motel Vance Joy visited when he was a kid. He said his family used to stay at a motel called Riptide during holidays. That's where he got the idea for the name.
Vance Joy chose his stage name from a book. He was reading a book called Bliss by Peter Carey. In the book, there's a character named Harry Joy whose grandfather is Vance Joy. This character is a storyteller. Vance Joy thought it sounded like a cool name.
2014–2016: Dream Your Life Away Album
On July 15, 2014, Vance Joy announced his first album would be called Dream Your Life Away. It was released in Australia on September 5, 2014, and worldwide soon after. In July 2014, he released "Mess Is Mine" as a song from the album. It reached number 37 in Australia. He played his first live concert with songs from this album in Melbourne in September 2014.
"Georgia" was released as a single in February 2015. Vance Joy said he started writing "Georgia" way back in 2006. He waited until he found the right words and music for it. A special version of the album was released in September 2015. It included two new songs and five live recordings. "Fire and the Flood" and "Straight into Your Arms" were also released as songs.
Vance Joy was chosen to open for Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour. He performed at all her concerts in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Taylor Swift even sang her own version of "Riptide" in October 2014. In November 2015, Vance Joy was featured on the TV show Today where he sang "Riptide".
In May 2015, he sang "Riptide" with Quentin Alexander on the TV show American Idol. Everyone in the audience gave them a standing ovation. In June 2015, Vance Joy released "Great Summer". This song was part of the music for the movie Paper Towns. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015, he won the award for Best Male Artist for Dream Your Life Away. He also won the International Songwriting Competition in 2014 for "Riptide."
2017–2020: Nation of Two and Live Album
In 2017, Vance Joy released two new songs for his second album. These were "Lay It on Me" in July and "Like Gold" in November. "Lay It on Me" was nominated for Song of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018. He released "We're Going Home" in January 2018. He wrote this song while on tour with Taylor Swift in 2015.
"Saturday Sun" came out in February 2018. Vance Joy said this song was inspired by the beaches along the Pacific Coast Highway in Los Angeles. The last song before the album, "Call If You Need Me", was released in February 2018.
Vance Joy's second album, Nation of Two, was released on February 23, 2018. It quickly became number 1 in Australia. It also won the award for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018. In September 2018, he released a new version of "I'm With You" from the album. In November 2018, Vance Joy released a live album called Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. This album was recorded during his Nation of Two World Tour at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. Vance Joy also opened for P!nk on her Beautiful Trauma World Tour in 2019.
2021–Present: In Our Own Sweet Time
On January 29, 2021, Vance Joy released a song called "You". This was a collaboration with other artists, Benny Blanco and Marshmello.
On May 20, 2021, he released the song "Missing Piece". This song was featured in an episode of the TV show Grey's Anatomy. The song became very popular in Australia and won the ARIA Award for Best Video at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards.
On April 7, 2022, Vance Joy announced his third album, In Our Own Sweet Time. It was released on June 10, 2022. In 2023, Vance Joy worked with Noah Cyrus on a song called "Everybody Needs Someone".
Personal Life
In November 2022, Vance Joy shared that he was engaged to Selen Us. They got married in June 2023. Selen Us gave birth to their daughter, Gigi, in early 2024. Vance Joy has said that his song "Missing Piece" was inspired by Selen Us.
