Vaxholm Municipality (also known as Vaxholms kommun or Vaxholms stad) is a special area in Stockholm County, located in east-central Sweden. It's called a municipality, which is like a local government area. The main town, or "seat," of Vaxholm Municipality is Vaxholm.

The municipality has a fun slogan: "Vaxholm – the capital of the archipelago." This is because it's right in the middle of a group of islands called an archipelago. From 1974 to 1984, Vaxholm was joined with another area called Österåker Municipality. They formed one big municipality, but their main office was in Åkersberga. After they separated, Vaxholm Municipality became even bigger than it was before. Today, the municipality often calls itself the City of Vaxholm.

Exploring Vaxholm's Geography

Vaxholm Municipality is part of the beautiful Stockholm archipelago. It's about 17 kilometers (11 miles) northeast of the big city of Stockholm. This area includes the Bogesundslandet peninsula and many islands. There are 64 islands and smaller islets in total!

Islands and Localities

Some of the main islands you can find here are Edholma, Edlunda, Granholmen, Hästholmen, Kullö, Ramsö, Resarö, Rindö, Risholmen, Skarpö, Skogsön, Stegesund-Hästholmen, Tynningö, Vaxholmen, and Vaxön.

The municipality also has five main urban areas, which are like small towns or villages. These are Resarö, Rindö, Skarpö, Tynningö, and Vaxholm. In 2010, Kullö was also its own urban area, but now it's considered part of the Vaxholm urban area.

Unique Places in Vaxholm

Other interesting places in the municipality include Karlsudd, Rindöby [sv], Rindö smedja [sv], and Ytterby. Ytterby is very famous for its geology. It's known because eight different chemical elements were first discovered there! That's a lot of elements for one place.
