Venator is a small, undeveloped place in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Venator is located on Crane–Venator Road, about 17 miles (27 km) southeast of Crane, close to the South Fork Malheur River.

The History of Venator
Venator was named after a family who settled there a long time ago. Alphena Venator moved to Harney County in 1872 when she was young. Her father, Jezreel, also has a place named after him: Venator Canyon.
How Venator Got Its Name
In 1884, Alphena Venator started a livestock ranch in the area. Because of her ranch, people started calling the place "Venator." It was a way to identify the location.
The Venator Post Office
A post office was opened in Venator in 1895. Louella Venator became the first postmaster, helping to deliver mail to the people living there. Later, the post office moved about two and a half miles north. It relocated to a station on a railroad line that is no longer used today. This line was part of the Union Pacific railroad.
What Venator Looks Like Today
By 1976, Venator was very small, with only six buildings and a corral. A corral is an area for keeping animals. However, in the past, there was a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp nearby. The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that helped young men find work on conservation projects.
Education in Venator
Students in Venator attend schools within the Harney County School District 4. This district includes Crane School, which teaches students from kindergarten through 8th grade. For high school, students go to Harney County Union High School District 1J, which includes Crane Union High School.
