Crane is a small community in Harney County, Oregon, in the United States. It is located northeast of Malheur Lake. In 2020, about 116 people lived there. Crane is known for its important high school.
History of Crane
Crane got its name from nearby Crane Creek and Crane Creek Gap. These places were likely named after the sandhill crane, a large bird that used to be very common in eastern Oregon.
The first post office in Crane opened in 1895 but closed a few years later. When the Union Pacific Railroad finished building its tracks to Crane in 1916, the post office reopened.
Before the railroad reached Burns in 1924, Crane was a very busy place for shipping livestock. The town was thriving with many businesses, including:
- five restaurants
- four hotels
- three garages
- two general stores
- a warehouse
- a lumber yard
- livery stables (where horses were kept)
- a dance hall
- a newspaper
- a bank
- a movie theater
However, after several fires, especially one in 1938, the town never became as busy again. Today, Crane has a post office, a gas station (which also has a café and tavern), a farm supply store, and a local real estate office. The Crane Union High School has become the most important part of the community.
