What is Venice Island?
Venice Island is a special piece of land in the huge Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. This delta is a network of rivers and channels that flow into the San Francisco Bay. The island covers about 3,100 acres, which is like 2,300 football fields! It's surrounded by different waterways.
Where is Venice Island Located?
Venice Island is bordered by several important waterways. To the north and northeast, you'll find Potato Slough. Little Connection Slough is to the southeast. The Stockton Deepwater Channel Venice Cut is on its south side. Finally, the San Joaquin River and the Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel are to its west. These waterways help define the island's shape and location.
Who Manages Venice Island?
The island is managed by a group called Reclamation District 2023. A reclamation district is a special local government group. Their main job is to manage water, often by building and maintaining levees. Levees are like walls that protect land from flooding. They also help with drainage.
Who Owns Venice Island?
Venice Island is privately owned. It belongs to the family of Barron Hilton, who was a famous businessman. The DiNapoli family also shares ownership of the island. This means it's not a public park or a place you can visit freely.
