Who Was Vijay Reddy?

Early Life and Beginnings

Vijay Reddy was born in a farming family in Tadepalligudem. This town was in the West Godavari district of what was then called Madras Presidency in British India. Later, he moved to Madras (which is now Chennai) to find work and start his career.

He began his journey in the film world as an assistant editor. He helped with a Kannada movie called Mane Tumbida Hennu, directed by B. Vittalacharya.

His Amazing Film Career

Vijay Reddy's first movie as a director was Rangamahal Rahasya in 1970. It starred Srinath and was a big hit, making him famous in the film industry. After that, he directed Modala Rathri (1970), but it wasn't as successful. His third movie, Cow Boy Kulla (1973), starring Dwarakish, did quite well.

A major turning point in his career came in 1973 with his fourth movie, Gandhada Gudi. This film was special because it was the 150th movie for Dr. Rajkumar, who was a top actor in Kannada films. It also featured Vishnuvardhan, who was becoming very popular. Gandhada Gudi became a huge milestone in Kannada cinema.

Vijay Reddy then directed five more super successful movies, all starring Dr. Rajkumar. These were Sri Srinivasa Kalyana, Mayura, Naa Ninna Mareyalare, Badavara Bandhu, and Sanaadi Appanna. He became known across India with the 1977 movie Sanaadi Appanna. In this film, the famous shehnai player Bismillah Khan actually played the instrument for the lead actor, Rajkumar! Vijay Reddy directed Rajkumar in nine movies, covering many different types of stories like myths, history, and social dramas.

He also had the unique honor of directing the 150th movies of two different big stars: Dr. Rajkumar (with Gandhada Gudi) and Vishnuvardhan (with Mojugara Sogasugara).

Vijay Reddy also helped other actors become famous. He gave Shankar Nag a strong image with the movie Auto Raja. Before that, he directed Anant Nag in Naa Ninna Bidalaare, which showed off Anant's great acting skills. He also directed two movies starring Shiva Rajkumar: Shiva Mecchida Kannappa and Gandhada Gudi Part 2. In both of these, Rajkumar made special guest appearances. Vijay Reddy even directed V. Ravichandran's very first movie, Khadeema Kallaru, where Ravichandran played a villain.

Working in Other Languages

Vijay Reddy didn't just make Kannada films. He also directed movies in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. One of his well-known Hindi films was Pyar Kiya Hai Pyar Karenge, which was a remake of his own Kannada movie Naa Ninna Mareyalare. It starred Anil Kapoor. Other Hindi movies he directed include Teri Meherbaniyan, Jawab Hum Denge, Ganga Tere Desh Mein, and Paap Ka Ant. His first Telugu movie was Srimathi.

He also produced two movies himself: Mullina Gulabi and Kunthiputra. He even started a production company called Vijaya Shekhar Productions with another director, V. Somashekhar. Together, they made several films. Vijay Reddy directed 17 Hindi films and six Telugu films, working with big stars like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, and Mithun Chakraborty. He made a total of 48 Kannada films. His last movie as a director was Karnataka Suputhra (1996), starring Vishnuvardhan.
