The biggest city in Vijfheerenlanden is Vianen. It is a very important spot for roads and rivers in the Netherlands. The second largest city is Leerdam.

Natural Borders

The northern and southern edges of the Vijfheerenlanden area are formed by rivers. The Lek River is to the north, and the Waal River is to the south. The eastern border runs through places like Haaften, Rhenoy, and Everdingen. The western border goes through Ameide, Meerkerk, and Arkel.

The Story of the Five Lords

The name "Vijfheerenlanden" comes from five important families, or "Lords," who lived here long ago. These were the Lords of Arkel, Ter Leede, Hagestein, Everdingen, and the Van Brederodes from Vianen. There were also dike builders from Haaften.

In 1284, these Lords worked together to protect their land. They needed to build strong defenses against floods from the Geldersche Betuwe area. The village of Haaften was most at risk from the water. So, the people there started to make their dikes taller and stronger. This teamwork helped keep the area safe from floods.
