History of Villa Nueva

How Amatitlán Department Was Created

Long ago, in 1839, a leader named Mariano Rivera Paz was the governor of Guatemala. On November 6, 1839, he made an important decision. He declared that Amatitlán and some nearby towns would become their own special area. This area was called an "independent district."

This new district included the cities of Amatitlán, San Cristóbal Palín, Villa Nueva, and San Miguel and Santa Inés Petapa. It also included all the smaller places connected to these towns. This new district would have its own local government. It would also have a local court to make sure justice was served.

Later, in 1866, this district changed its name. It became known as the Amatitlán Department. This change was made by the government of Field Marshall Vicente Cerna y Cerna.

When Amatitlán Department Ended

Many years later, in 1935, another president named General Jorge Ubico made a new rule. On April 29, 1935, he decided to close down the Amatitlán Department. He believed it was better for the country.

His rule said that the Amatitlán Department was officially ended. The cities of Amatitlán, Villa Nueva, San Miguel Petapa, and Villa Canales then became part of the Guatemala Department. The towns of Palín and San Vicente Pacaya joined the Escuintla Department. This change officially started on July 1, 1935.
