Villaquilambre is a town and a local government area (called a municipality) in the Province of León, which is part of the Castile and León region in Spain. In 2018, about 18,676 people lived there.

Where is Villaquilambre?
Villaquilambre is located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) north of the city of León. It sits on the right side of the Torío River. The total area of the municipality is about 52.7 square kilometers (20.3 square miles).
Mountains and Rivers
The highest point in Villaquilambre is a spot called Alto de la Vallina Fonda. It reaches 1,028 meters (3,373 feet) above sea level. The average height of the area is 870 meters (2,854 feet). Villaquilambre is located where a wide valley meets the Cantabrian Mountains to the north. The Torío River also joins the Bernesga River nearby.
Neighboring Towns
Villaquilambre shares its borders with other municipalities. To the west, you'll find Sariegos. To the north is Garrafe de Torío, and to the east is Valdefresno.
Local Plant Life
The slopes to the west and north of Villaquilambre are covered with oak trees. This includes the Mediterranean oak. Near the Torío River to the east, you can see willow and poplar trees. Higher up on the slopes, there are pine forests.

The municipality of Villaquilambre includes several smaller villages. These are Alfoz de León, Canaleja de Torío, Castrillino, Navatejera, Robledo de Torío, Villamoros de las Regueras, Villanueva del Árbol, Villaobispo de la Regueras, Villaquilambre itself, Villarrodrigo de la Regueras, and Villasinta de Torío.
Ancient Roman History
In the village of Navatejera, you can find the remains of an old Roman villa. This villa had beautiful mosaic floors and parts of hot baths. Farmers' tools found at this site are now on display at the León Museum.
What is the Economy Like?
While farming is common in the wider Province of León, Villaquilambre's economy mainly relies on service industries. These are businesses that provide services, like shops or offices.
Growth in Industry
Since 2000, an industrial park was built in Navatejera. This has created more jobs in factories and research. For example, a pharmaceutical company called Laboratorios León Farma is located there.
Why is Villaquilambre Growing?
Villaquilambre has grown a lot in the 21st century. Many people choose to live here because it can be cheaper than living in the center of nearby León. Between 2001 and 2008, the population grew by 6,224 people. This made Villaquilambre the fastest-growing municipality in the entire province. It grew even faster than bigger cities like Ponferrada and León.
