The Vinaceous Dove (Streptopelia vinacea) is a type of bird from the pigeon family. It lives in many parts of Africa, especially in areas called the Sahel and Sudan. This dove is known for its soft, wine-colored feathers.

About the Vinaceous Dove's Name

Scientists give every living thing a special two-part name. This helps everyone around the world know exactly which animal they are talking about. The Vinaceous Dove's scientific name is Streptopelia vinacea.

The first part, Streptopelia, comes from ancient Greek words. "Streptós" means "twisted," and "péleia" means "wild dove." This might refer to the twisted metal collars (called torcs) people used to wear. The second part, vinacea, comes from a Latin word meaning "of wine" or "wine-colored." This describes the dove's pretty reddish-pink feathers.

A German scientist named Johann Friedrich Gmelin first officially described this bird in 1789. Later, a French scientist named Charles Lucien Bonaparte placed it in the Streptopelia group in 1855.

What Does the Vinaceous Dove Look Like?

The Vinaceous Dove is a small, plump pigeon. It is usually about 25 centimeters (10 inches) long. Its back, wings, and tail are a light brown color.

When it flies, you can see dark, almost black, feathers under its wings. Its head and belly are a soft pinkish-grey. It has a special black patch on the back of its neck, which has white edges. The dove's legs are red. Young doves are not as brightly colored as the adults. Its call sounds like a quick "coo-cu-cu-coo."

Where Do Vinaceous Doves Live?

The Vinaceous Dove is a common bird found in central and western African countries. You can find them in places like Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Nigeria.

These doves love to live in areas with lots of bushes and open grasslands, known as savannah. They often build their nests in trees, especially acacia trees. Their nests are made of sticks, and the female dove usually lays two white eggs.

How Do Vinaceous Doves Fly and Eat?

Vinaceous Doves fly very quickly. Like other pigeons, they have a regular wing beat and sometimes give a sharp flick of their wings.

These doves spend a lot of time on the ground. They look for food there. Their diet mainly consists of grass seeds, grains, and other plant parts. Unlike some other doves, they are very social. They often feed in large groups, sometimes even with other types of doves.
