About the Vlist River
Vlist gets its name from the river that flows through it. Most of the people in Vlist live along this river. The Vlist river connects the Lek river and the city of Schoonhoven to Haastrecht. In Haastrecht, the Vlist river flows into the Hollandsche IJssel river. The Vlist river is about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long.
How the River Was Used
In the past, the Vlist river was very important for managing water. It acted as a drainage basin for the low-lying areas called polders around it. Many windmills stood along the riverbanks. These windmills helped pump water out of the polders and into the river. The river was also used to transport goods, especially from Schoonhoven to Utrecht.
Vlist River Today
Today, the Vlist river is mostly used for fun activities and tourism. It is very popular with people who enjoy cycling and walking. They love to ride their bikes or walk along the river. You can also rent canoes in Haastrecht and paddle along the river. If the river freezes solid in winter, a special ice-skating event called the "Two Provinces skating tour" takes place.
A Royal Event at Goejanverwellesluis
A famous historical event happened near the Vlist river. In 1787, Wilhelmina of Prussia was stopped by a group called the Patriots from Gouda. She was on her way to The Hague. Her goal was to convince the government to let her husband, William V, return to the city.
The Patriots wanted to stop her. They took her to a farm near a place called the Goejanverwellesluis. This spot is in what is now Hekendorp. Wilhelmina was not allowed to go further into Holland. She had to return to Nijmegen without achieving her goal.
This event happened on June 28, 1787. It led directly to an invasion of the Dutch Republic by Frederick William II of Prussia. This invasion caused the Patriots to lose power. Even though the event is known as the Arrest at Goejanverwellesluis, it actually happened at a place called Bonrepas.
Vlist's International Connections
