Vänersborg Municipality (called Vänersborgs kommun in Swedish) is a special area in western Sweden. It's like a local government area. It's located in Västra Götaland County. The main town, or "seat," where the local government offices are, is Vänersborg.
This municipality was created in the early 1970s. In 1971, the city of Vänersborg became its own municipality. A few years later, in 1974, it joined up with three other nearby municipalities. Before that, in 1863, there were eight smaller local government areas that now make up Vänersborg Municipality.
