The Wabash Confederacy was a group of Native American villages in the 1700s. These villages were located along the Wabash River. This area is now part of the U.S. states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

The main groups in the Wabash Confederacy were the Miami, Weas, and Piankashaws. Other tribes like the Kickapoos and Mascoutens also lived there. These tribes did not have one single government. Instead, they were a loose alliance of important village leaders. These leaders were sometimes called headmen or chiefs.

What Was the Wabash Confederacy?

The Wabash Confederacy was not a single, large tribe. It was more like a network of villages. These villages were home to different Native American groups. They lived and worked together in the Wabash River area.

Who Were the Main Tribes?

The most important tribes in the Confederacy were the Miami, Wea, and Piankashaw. These groups shared similar cultures and languages. They often helped each other. Other tribes also joined them for protection or trade.

Life Along the Wabash River

Life for these tribes centered around the Wabash River. The river provided water, food, and a way to travel. They hunted, fished, and farmed the land. Their villages were often built near the riverbanks.

Why Did They Form an Alliance?

In the 1780s, the Wabash Confederacy joined a larger alliance. This bigger group was called the Northwestern Confederacy. It included many Native American leaders from the Ohio Country and Illinois Country. They formed this alliance to protect their lands.

Resisting U.S. Expansion

After the American Revolutionary War, the United States began to expand. They wanted to move into Native American lands. The tribes of the Wabash and Northwestern Confederacies did not want this to happen. They decided to work together to resist.

Warnings to Congress

In 1786, a messenger named Scotosh, from the Wyandot tribe, sent a warning. He told the U.S. Congress that the Wabash and Miami nations would stop U.S. surveyors. Surveyors were people who measured land. Congress warned that there would be trouble if this happened.

The Northwest Indian War

This resistance led to a conflict known as the Northwest Indian War. It was a fight between the United States and the Native American alliances. The Wabash Confederacy was part of this war. The war ended for the Wabash Confederacy in 1792. They signed a treaty, which is a formal agreement, with the United States.
