The Wachau is a beautiful valley in Austria. It was shaped by the mighty Danube River. This area is a very popular place for tourists in Lower Austria. It stretches for about 40 kilometres (25 mi) between the towns of Melk and Krems. People have lived in this area for a very long time, even since prehistoric times.

One famous spot and tourist attraction is Dürnstein. This is where King Richard the Lion-Heart of England was once held prisoner by Duke Leopold V. Richard the Lion-Heart was a famous English king who led armies during the Crusades.

The Wachau is special because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is recognized globally for its amazing history, beautiful buildings, and traditional farming methods.
