Wahlstrom Peak facts for kids
Wahlstrom Peak is a tall, pointy mountain peak in Antarctica. It stands about 4,677 meters (or 15,344 feet) high. This peak is found on the southeast side of the Vinson Plateau, which is covered in ice. It's part of the Sentinel Range in the Ellsworth Mountains.
This peak rises above the Roché Glacier to its northwest and Hammer Col to its southeast.
Who Was Wahlstrom Peak Named After?
Wahlstrom Peak was named in 2006 by a group called US-ACAN (United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names). It was named after Richard W. Wahlstrom.
Richard Wahlstrom was part of an American expedition in 1966–67. This team was the first to successfully climb Mount Vinson. Mount Vinson is the highest mountain in all of Antarctica! They also climbed other tall mountains in the Sentinel Range.
Where is Wahlstrom Peak Located?
Wahlstrom Peak is located at 78°32′59″S, 85°31′29″W. This spot is about 2.11 miles (or 3.4 kilometers) southeast of Mount Vinson.
It is also about 1.87 miles (or 3.01 kilometers) southwest of Marts Peak. And it's about 1.44 miles (or 2.32 kilometers) northeast of Opalchenie Peak. Maps of this area were first made in 1961 and then updated in 1988.
