Waianae or Waiʻanae (pronounced like "vai-uh-NAH-eh") is a community located in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 13,614 people lived there.
The name Waianae comes from Hawaiian words meaning "waters of the mullet." Mullet is a type of fish. Interestingly, a town in New Zealand called Waikanae has a similar name origin.
