DeForest George Buckner (born March 17, 1994) is a professional football player. He plays as a defensive tackle for the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL). He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Before that, he played college football for the Oregon Ducks.
Buckner has achieved many honors in his career. With the 49ers, he was named to the Pro Bowl and was a second-team All-Pro in 2019. After joining the Colts, he became a first-team All-Pro in 2020 and was selected for the Pro Bowl again in 2021 and 2023.

Early Life and High School Sports
DeForest Buckner was born on March 17, 1994. His mother is Samoan, and his father is African American. He grew up in Hawaii and went to Punahou School in Honolulu.
At Punahou, DeForest was a highly-rated football player. He also played basketball and was very good at it. In 2012, he was named the Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year for basketball. In January 2012, he decided to play college football at the University of Oregon.
College Football Career
Buckner played for the Oregon Ducks from 2012 to 2015.
- As a freshman in 2012, he played in all 13 games. He made 29 tackles and had 1.0 sack.
- In 2013, his sophomore year, he started eight games. He recorded 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
- During his junior year in 2014, he had 81 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Many thought he might be picked early in the NFL Draft. However, he chose to stay for his senior year. He wanted to graduate and improve his skills even more.
- In 2015, his senior season, Buckner had his best year. He made 83 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks.
After his amazing senior year, Buckner received several awards. He was named the Pac-12 Conference Football Defensive Player of the Year. He also won the Morris Trophy, which is given to the best defensive lineman in the Pac-12. Other players in the conference vote for this award. He was also named a first-team All-American. After this successful season, Buckner decided to enter the 2016 NFL draft.

San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers picked DeForest Buckner as the seventh overall player in the 2016 NFL draft. He was the second defensive end from Oregon chosen by the 49ers in two years.
First Season: 2016
Buckner played his first NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams. He had one tackle in their 28–0 win. Later in the season, he had a great game against the Buffalo Bills. He recorded nine tackles and got his first two NFL sacks. He also recovered a fumble in that game.
In Week 14, he had 11 tackles and two more sacks against the New York Jets. Buckner finished his first year with 73 tackles and six sacks. He led all defensive linemen in the NFL with the most plays on the field. He was also named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
Second Season: 2017
In 2017, Buckner continued to play well for the 49ers defense. He recorded his first sack of the season against the Arizona Cardinals. Later, he had a season-high nine tackles against the Tennessee Titans. He finished the year with 61 tackles, five pass deflections, and three sacks.
Third Season: 2018
Buckner started the 2018 season strong. In the first two games, he had 12 tackles and 3.5 sacks. This quickly passed his total from the previous year. He had two sacks in a game against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13. Two weeks later, he had 11 tackles and two more sacks against the Seahawks.
Buckner ended his third season with 67 tackles and a career-high 12 sacks. This was the most sacks by a 49ers player since 2012. Because of his excellent performance, Buckner was chosen for his first Pro Bowl.
Fourth Season: 2019
In 2019, the 49ers decided to keep Buckner for another year by using an option in his contract. He continued to be a key player for the team. Against the Cleveland Browns, he had a "strip sack," which means he tackled the quarterback and made him drop the ball. His teammate recovered it.
In a game against the Seattle Seahawks, Buckner recovered two fumbles. One of them he returned 12 yards for a touchdown! He finished the 2019 season with 61 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and a touchdown. He was named a second-team All-Pro player.
Buckner also played well in the playoffs. He had a sack against the Minnesota Vikings and recovered a fumble against the Green Bay Packers. He helped the 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV. In the Super Bowl, he had 1.5 sacks, but the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Indianapolis Colts
First Season with Colts: 2020
On March 18, 2020, the 49ers traded Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. In return, the 49ers received a first-round draft pick. Buckner then signed a big contract with the Colts, making him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles.
In his second game with the Colts, he sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety. This gave the Colts two points. Later in the season, he recovered a fumble in overtime against the Green Bay Packers, helping the Colts win. In Week 15, he had a career-high three sacks against the Houston Texans. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for this game.
Buckner finished his first season with the Colts with 58 tackles and 9.5 sacks. He was named a first-team All-Pro for the 2020 season.
Second Season with Colts: 2021
In 2021, Buckner continued to be a strong force for the Colts. He recorded a sack in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. He also had sacks in games against the Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New England Patriots.
Buckner finished the 2021 season with 68 tackles and seven sacks. He was named to his second Pro Bowl.
Third Season with Colts: 2022
In 2022, Buckner played in all 17 games for the Colts. He had 74 tackles and eight sacks. After the season, he shared that he played the entire year with an injury to his left elbow.
Fourth Season with Colts: 2023
In Week 1 of the 2023 season, Buckner had an exciting play. He recovered a fumble and ran it 26 yards for a touchdown! He played in all 17 games again. He recorded a career-high 81 tackles and had eight sacks. For his great performance, he earned his third Pro Bowl nomination.
Fifth Season with Colts: 2024
On April 15, 2024, the Colts signed Buckner to a new contract. This deal keeps him with the team through the 2026 season. In the 2024 season, he recorded 6.5 sacks and 61 tackles.
