Wakenaam is a beautiful island located where the Essequibo River meets the ocean in Guyana. It's about 45 square kilometers (17.5 square miles) in size. Wakenaam is one of the biggest islands in the Essequibo group, along with Leguan and Hogg Island.
The island was first settled by the Dutch in the 1700s. The name "Wakenaam" comes from a Dutch phrase meaning "waiting for a name." You can still find old Dutch graves on the island today. Like other islands in the Essequibo River, Wakenaam is known for its green plants, clear blue skies, and cool breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. Many villages are found on the island, such as Maria's Pleasure, Good Success, Sans Souci, Melville, and Zeelandia.
