Early Life and Family
Walker Stapleton was born in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. His family has a long history in Colorado, going back to the early 1900s. He went to the private Brunswick School and later to Williams College in Massachusetts. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Harvard Business School.
Walker Stapleton's mother, Dorothy Walker Stapleton, is related to former U.S. President George H. W. Bush. This makes Walker Stapleton a second cousin to former U.S. President George W. Bush and former Florida governor Jeb Bush. He has said that George H. W. Bush inspired him to get involved in politics. His father, Craig Roberts Stapleton, is a diplomat. His great-grandfather, Benjamin F. Stapleton, was the mayor of Denver for many years.
His Career Journey
Walker Stapleton started his career in 1997 as an investment banker at a company called Hambrecht & Quist. After two years, he became a director at Live365, a company focused on business development. Before becoming Colorado Treasurer in 2011, he worked as a CEO and CFO for different companies.
In 2014, Stapleton was chosen as an Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow, which is a program for young leaders. In January 2022, Governor Jared Polis appointed him to Colorado's Economic Development Commission. This commission helps improve the state's economy.
Elections and Public Service
Walker Stapleton served two terms as the Treasurer of Colorado. This role involves managing the state's money. He first ran for this position in 2010 and won the Republican primary election. He then won the general election against Cary Kennedy. In 2014, he ran for re-election as Treasurer and won again, serving a second term.
